Baking Up Some Intentions

Hello friends!

Whew! Can you believe the holidays are over and we are over a week into 2021!? Time is such a weird thing. I feel like I was waiting for December to come for so long (it’s my favorite month) just to blink and watch it pass in a flash.

Of course with the beginning of the new year, a lot of us are thinking about New Year’s resolutions. I’ve definitely made some resolutions in the past, but have found that by March I have usually lost motivation. This year I want to try something a little different and set some New Year’s intentions. I don’t know about you, but setting an intention instead of a resolution feels more doable. With a resolution, once I start to lose motivation, there is accompanying guilt for “failing” at my goal. With an intention, I know that my goal is just to do my best and if I have a set back, that’s ok, because it’s my intention that matters.

Holding yourself accountable on a social platform like this can also be useful. So without further ado, my intentions this year:

1. Focus on my running habit again. This fell off for me in the last year when I decided to focus more heavily on yoga and simultaneously had a sharp increase in foot pain that has bothered me for years. While the pain isn’t gone, I don’t want it to stop me from my favorite workout activity as long as I’m not going to injure myself. I’ve been focusing on stretching out my foot and calves before and after running and trying to apply a hot water bottle and massage to soothe the pain instead of popping four ibuprofen every time I need to run. So far so good on this intention. I decided to try a method Track Club Babe put me onto to develop a neglected running habit and commit to running just two miles every other day for a month. I liked this strategy because it feels so realistic and doable. I have started training programs before just to realize two weeks in I don’t have the motivation quite yet to be increasing my mileage so much and end up cutting runs short. I started a little earlier than Jan. 1 and am pleased that two weeks in, I am still on track and have been logging those two milers every other day.

I have also been baking up some goodies that bring me to another intention.

2. Fuel my body with more protein and less sugar this year. I love baking. I love muffins and cakes and tarts and strudels. But with all those yummy treats comes a lot of sugar. I think I eat fairly healthy most of the time except when it comes to those sweets so this year I am focusing on continuing to enjoy baking, but getting creative with my sweeteners and sugars. These blueberry muffins have 9g of protein per muffin and are made with almond flour and Swerve sweetener (leftover from my keto diet days) that were a filling and less sugary treat than my regular muffins this week.

3. Drink 90 ounces of water a day. It is soooo hard for me to drink enough water so this is a big intention. 90 oz. is more water than I probably actually need for my body weight, but I want to be SO HYDRATED in 2021 that I really want to reach for 90 oz. everyday. Right now I average about 6-8 glasses of water a day so there is room for improvement but tracking it on an app (there are so many water tracking apps) has helped me. Also drinking carbonated, flavored waters breaks up the monotony of powering down tap water all day and helps me reach my goal.

My last intention isn’t so health oriented. We recently visited my dad and were able to move my childhood piano from his house to our house. It was quite the feat moving a piano in a small trailer over 400 miles, but we made it. I grew up taking piano lessons and listening to my parents play beautifully so I was really excited when my dad had the idea to give me the piano now that we have space for it. I don’t plan necessarily on taking lessons again, but my intention is to become a proficient pianist again this year and enjoy our new instrument as much as possible. Eric knows the way to my heart and gifted me some Harry Potter sheet music to get started. I’m so excited!

So here we are! Moving into the new year full of hope and intention. I can’t wait to see what this year will bring! Share some of your New Year’s intentions or resolutions with me! How are they going so far?
