Race Day!

Hello and happy Saturday! Today was the Run to the Shrine 4-mile race! I had a blast.

That’s the Shrine! It’s two miles up and two miles down and a portion of the race goes right through my zoo. My husband joined me and he had a really good time too. We had a freak snow storm a couple of days ago and I was worried it would be cold and snowy, but the day turned out to be beautiful.

The race was well organized and started promptly at 8:30.

I found some keeper friends to stay warm with until it was time to start running.

And then we were off! The first two miles are UPHILL. Like I could barely breathe kind of uphill. I walked quite a bit.

So close….but so far still. But the views more than made up for my chest being on fire.

Gosh I love Colorado. There were drummers along the course to pump you up and a fantastic band at the top! Loved it.

The first super fast racers were already flying down when I passed the first mile marker. The top finisher completed the course is something like 25 minutes! I can’t imagine running that fast. I was a little wary of eating it on the way down, but managed to stay upright even while taking pictures.

You seriously felt closer to the clouds than to the earth up there. I did manage to run the whole way down and LOVED that I got to run past my coworkers cheering me on! I passed the commissary (where we prepare the food for the zoo animals) and there must have been 5 or 6 of my friends screaming my name. That doesn’t happen at a regular race and it gave me a huge smile that lasted to the finish line.

It was a great race and I can’t wait to do it again next year! The race ended near the goats I work with so I stopped by to give some sweaty snuggles to Cheddar, my main squeeze.

And then we were off. I kicked up my lucky Harry Potter socks while the hubs drove us back to Denver.

The rest of the day should be pretty laid back. I hope you have a great weekend! If you’re racing today, I hope you crushed your goals!!
